How to build a youth XI

A player's Overall (OVR) is how good they are today. Their Potential (POT) is the ceiling they can reach. The gap between them is growth headroom — and for a youth project, headroom is what you're really buying.

A 17-year-old at 72 OVR with 90 POT will, over a few seasons, outgrow a 21-year-old who is already 80 OVR but capped at 84. The second player helps you win this season; the first one is the reason you started a youth project at all.

Rather than ranking by raw potential, FC Sensei combines three things: the potential ceiling, the headroom still to grow, and how young the player is. Younger players with a big gap to their ceiling rise to the top — that's the Sensei Score you see on every card.

We publish the arithmetic rather than asking you to trust it: see how the Sensei Score works.

Start from the formation, not the players. A 4-3-3 needs width and a lone striker who can press; a 3-5-2 demands wing-backs with the engine to cover the whole flank. In the builder, each position only accepts players who can actually play there — so the shape stays honest.

This is the discipline that separates a squad from a collection. It is always tempting to take the highest Sensei Score on the board; the question that matters is whether they fit the slot you still need.

The wonderkid pool is a deliberate lens over the full player database: aged 21 or under with a potential rating of 85 or above. Those two floors are the whole filter. Everything else — the ranking, the Scout Report, the growth bars — is built on top of them.

Open the Squad Builder, choose a formation, and fill each slot from the wonderkid pool. Watch your squad rating climb as you find the right young player for every role.
