Position archetypes: what each slot actually needs

6 min read

Every slot on the pitch is a job description. Two players can share an Overall rating and a Sensei Score and still be completely wrong for each other's positions. This lesson is about reading the slot before you read the player.

Eligibility is exact, and that is deliberate

In the Squad Builder, a player can fill a slot only if that exact position appears in their list — either as their primary position or among their alternates. A CB is not offered the CDM slot just because both are "defensive". A CM is not slotted at CAM because the numbers look close.

That strictness is the point. EA's position list already encodes which roles a player has actually been trained for, and a squad that quietly plays people out of position looks stronger on paper than it is on the pitch.

The archetypes

Fifteen positions, but far fewer actual jobs. These are the groupings worth thinking in:

PositionsThe jobWhat to prize in a young one
GKLast lineThe slowest-maturing role on the pitch. A keeper with a high ceiling is worth holding through years of ordinary ratings.
CBCentral defenderCeiling over current ability. Defenders tend to peak late, so a big gap between Overall and Potential is normal rather than a warning.
LB · RB · LWB · RWBFull-back / wing-backNote that a wing-back slot needs LWB/RWB specifically. In a 3-5-2 this is the hardest slot to fill from a youth pool — plan it first, not last.
CDMHolding midfielderOften the cheapest high-ceiling position in the pool, because the role is unglamorous. This is where value hides.
CMCentral midfielderThe most versatile card in a youth squad — many CMs also carry CDM or CAM, which makes them useful cover across a whole shape.
CAMPlaymakerCrowded and expensive: attacking midfielders are what everyone else is shopping for too. Expect to pay a premium for headroom here.
LM · RM · LW · RWWide playerCheck which pair a player actually holds. LW and LM are not interchangeable in the builder, and a 4-4-2 wants the midfield pair while a 4-3-3 wants the wingers.
ST · CFForwardThe most legible position in the game, and priced accordingly. A striker with real headroom under €5M is a genuine find.

Fill the scarce slots first

A youth pool is not evenly distributed. High-potential attackers are plentiful; high-potential wing-backs and keepers are not. If you fill your XI in formation order — keeper, defence, midfield, attack — you will usually find the last slots easy and the early ones painful.

Work the other way. Fill the positions with the thinnest supply while you still have the whole pool available, then spend what's left on the roles where good options are abundant.

Versatility is a squad-level asset

A player listed at three positions is worth more to a youth project than their rating suggests, because they let you change shape without rebuilding. When two prospects are close, the one who covers CM, CDM and CAM gives you options the specialist never will.

You can see every player's full position list on their profile, or line candidates up side by side on the compare page, which has a dedicated Positions row for exactly this.
